Unit 2 Befriending Scheme – University of Stirling Evaluation for Aberlour Child Care Trust – Summary
Year of publication: 2006Publisher: Aberlour / University of Stirling
Summary:
A summary of an evaluation of the Youth Crime component of the Unit 2 Befriending Scheme. The aims of the project were to recruit, train and support at least 25 volunteer befrienders and match them with young people aged 8-16 from within the Stirling and Clackmannanshire local authority areas who were identified as at risk of offending, already involved in offending, a victim or witness of crime.
Key findings included: the befriending relationship had a notable impact on young people’s communication skills, increased social networks and involvement in leisure activities. Offending was reduced and school attendance and attainment increased. Strengthened resilience. They really valued the fact that befrienders spent time with them because they wanted to rather than because they were being paid.
