Safeguarding the Convoy – a call to action from the Campaign to End Loneliness
Year of publication: 2011Publisher: Age UK Oxfordshire / Campaign to End Loneliness
Summary: The Campaign to End Loneliness was launched by five organisations and aims to create connections in older age. The early work of the campaign is to collate evidence for what seems to reduce loneliness ahd this document is the results of this early work.
Befriending is one of the interventions they explore as it is key to combating social isolation for vulnerable older people. The report suggests that voluntary organisations should improve and build on such interventions and highlights telephone befriending as a low-cost solution. However, the report also acknowledges that to date there is little hard evidence that befriending alleviates loneliness in older people.
