What support needs will you require in the future?
22 February 2012Over the past ten years, Big Lottery have spent more than £200 million on capacity building including a wide range of high quality projects funded through their BASIS programme.
Dharmendra Kanani, England Director, Big Lottery Fund said:
“Helping VCS organisations and social enterprises to become more effective will continue to be a priority for BIG over the next few years. The approach we are taking will mean that they are able to get the support they need to do their work and that people and communities most in need will see greater benefits from our funding. This discussion paper is intended to stimulate debate and gives an opportunity for voluntary and other organisations to influence our approach. I would encourage interested parties to complete our survey and have a say.“
The principles set out in their Building capacity for impact and legacy; a discussion paper build on many years of learning, and the approach which we set out recognises the crucial importance of this work.
You can get involved by:
- Filling out the online survey by 15th March
- Reading the discussion paper and commenting on the questions
- Commenting on Professor Diana Leat’s blog
Don’t forget to mention specialist support organisations such as the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, if you feel that this type of support is valuable. In a recent survey 92% of respondents told us that there is a need for specialist support around mentoring and befriending. Comments made in this survey included:
- “The specialist volunteering role in mentoring and befriending relationships benefits immensely from support of a dedicated umbrella body with expertise in the field”
- “MBF expertise and experience offered by its staff has been crucial in ensuring the success of thousands of mentoring and befriending schemes nationwide”
- “MBF is invaluable in identifying and closing gaps in reporting and increasing our understanding of and response to project sustainability”
- “By its support for small, voluntary and community based orgs, MBF is opening up public services away from institutional management and enable local projects help to deliver at grassroots level, often to unreached communities.”
