NOMS volunteering and mentoring project

MoJ NOMS logo

We are one of eight voluntary sector organisations to be awarded funding from NOMS (National Offender Management Service) as part of their ‘Reducing Re-offending National Voluntary Sector Grant’. Our partner organisations are: SOVA, Pact, Network for Black Professionals, Care Leavers Association, Caring for Ex-Offenders, Female Prisoners Welfare Project – Hibiscus and Together Women Project.

The aim of the Volunteering and Mentoring Project is to support the development of mentoring and volunteering services for offenders through improving the accessibility of information on quality-assured mentoring services.

The project is working with organisations across England and Wales that provide a specific mentoring service to adults aged 18+ within the Criminal Justice System in order to raise awareness of mentoring opportunities and to increase the number of volunteers and mentors within these services whether they are delivered in prison, through the gate or in the community.

We are also working to support mentoring organisations working with offenders and ex-offenders to achieve the Approved Provider Standard (APS) and to be listed on the hub as well as identifying and sharing good practice in the provision of mentoring for this specific client group. Development of an information hub

The focal point of the project is the development of a hub of mentoring and volunteering information aimed at offenders, ex-offenders and prison/probation staff who may be interested in accessing a mentoring service and also members of the public and ex-offenders who may be interested in volunteering within these services. We are working closely with our partners The Prince’s Trust and St Giles Trust to develop the hub.

The project builds on the GateMate campaign which promoted ‘through the gate’ and community mentoring support.
