Overview of the programme

We are pleased to announce that our London-based monitoring and evaluation programme is now open for a fresh round of applications. This is a free programme of training and support for mentoring and befriending projects in the London area.

Funded by the City Bridge Trust, the programme is building the capacity of mentoring and befriending projects across London to evidence their outcomes on service users and volunteers. The programme has already helped more than 50 organisations develop competent monitoring and evaluation activities, and now it will support up to 60 more between 2013 and 2014.

With increasing competition in the third sector for funding and other resources, monitoring and evaluation is a vital tool for organisations both large and small.  This programme has been developed in response to a recent MBF funding survey, in which a growing number (47%) of projects stated that they wanted support with evidencing soft outcomes and a further 82% stated that they have limited internal capacity, lack of resources, experience and confidence in developing frameworks, tools and approach for meaningful and effective evaluation.

MBF is offering a training and support package to help you develop your monitoring and evaluation processes. This is not simply a training exercise, by the end of the programme you will come away with a quality outcomes report that you will have written which includes data gathered and evaluated by you and your team. Tailored specifically for mentoring and befriending organisations, this project is absolutely free for all successful applicants.

This package will build on MBF’s outcomes based toolkit and our extensive experience of delivering training and providing guidance and support to projects. Developed by ‘the sector for the sector’ it draws on good practice already established in organisations both in London and across the country.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Define what your project aims to achieve and the intended specific outcomes for your clients and/or volunteers
  • Plan your monitoring and evaluation processes
  • Decide what data collection methods will help you to monitor outcomes
  • Develop your own monitoring tools
  • Collect and analyse your data
  • Write up your findings within a report

As part of this free package, you will be provided with:

  • Monitoring and evaluation training uniquely tailored to mentoring and befriending organisations
  • An opportunity to network with other organisations in your field, with opportunities throughout the programme to meet with trainers and discuss progress
  • A comprehensive package of support to ensure all your questions are answered and issues dealt with
  • A chance to develop a professional, high impact outcomes report on your projects by August 2014

What you need to commit?

If you choose to apply, you must commit to participate to the programme for the full duration until August 2014. This will include two consecutive days of training in September 2013 and one day in May 2014. During that time you will be expected to plan and then implement a range of monitoring and evaluation activities that will be required to develop your final outcomes report.

Wherever possible we will try to pair you up with organisations working in similar fields. We will encourage you to network and share your experiences with your fellow participants. The cohorts will run between Autumn 2013 and Autumn 2014.

Come to a briefing
MBF will host two free, half-day briefings in London where the monitoring and evaluation coordinator will be on hand to explain how the programme will work. You will be able to put your questions to the coordinator after a short presentation. There will also be able to take part in a small ‘taster’ monitoring and evaluation activity.

Both briefings will be held in Central London on either 17 July between 0930 and 1230, or on 24 July between 1300 and 1630. To book a space on these events, please contact Emily by emailing info@mandbf.org, or calling 03300 882 877.

How to Apply
To apply please complete this online application form. Applications are now open and will close on 2 September 2013. Before applying please take note of eligibility requirements and the commitment needed by you and your organisation by reading the programme leaflet.

Complete our survey!
To make our upcoming training and support package the best it can be, we need to know what concerns you most about monitoring and evaluation. We would be grateful if you could spare a few minutes to complete this online survey. The results will feed back into how MBF delivers its programme of support.
